What is a Block in Volleyball?

The Block in Volleyball is a basic defensive skill. It is the first defensive action of a Volleyball team.

What is the goal of a Block in Volleyball?

The goal of a Block in Volleyball is, as the name suggests, to block an Attack from the opposing team or to diminish the space available for an Attack.

How is the Block performed in Volleyball?

The Blocking Technique is done next to the net and must follow the following stages:

  • jump vertically with the arms extended and pointing upward;
  • the palms of the hands facing the opposing team’s court;
  • penetrate the space above the net with the hands after the adversary’s Attack.

Types of Blocks in Volleyball

Offensive Block

It is an agressive Block whose goal is to return the ball to the opposing team’s court, making it touch the floor.

Defensive Block

It is a Block whose goal is to damp the hit from the adversary’s Attack and make the defense action of the team easier.

Single Block

It is the Block performed by only one blocker, usually used to Block attacks at the center of the net.

Double Block

It is the Block performed by two blockers, usually used to Block attacks at the sides of the net.

Triple Block

It is the Block performed by three blockers, widely used to block attacks following a Set that is high and slow.

Blocking Rules in Volleyball

  • The touch of the Block does not count as one of the three allowed touches by the team in Volleyball;
  • It is not allowed to Block the opposing team’s Serve;
  • The blockers are allowed to penetrate the space above the net of the opposing team (after the opponent’s attack);
  • Blockers are not permitted to touch the net with any body part.
  • Only the players in the front line in the Rotation (attack zone) are allowed to take part in the Block;
  • The blockers are not allowed to touch the antennae;
  • The Libero is not allowed to Block or attempt to block an attack.
