What is the role of the Outside Hitter in Volleyball?
The role of the Outside Hitter includes the following:
- Taking part in the Serve Reception in all positions of the rotation;
- Participating in the Attacks at the end of the net (position 4, on the left side of the Net);
- Participating in the Attacks in the back of the court or second hits.
What are the Attributes of an Outside Hitter in Volleyball?
The main attributes of the Outside Hitter in Volleyball are:
- High level of technical skill to attack and defend;
- Specialization in quick Attacks at the end of the net (position 4 in rotation);
- Specialization in Serve Reception and Defense.
What is the Position of an Outside Hitter in Volleyball?
A Volleyball team using the 5-1 Formation counts with two Outside Hitters. During rotation, they are always positioned opposite to each other.
- When an Outside Hitter is in position 1, the other is in position 4.
- When an Outside Hitter is in position 2, the other is in position 5.
- When an Outside Hitter is in position 3, the other is in position 6.
When a team receives the Serve, both Outside Hitters must be positioned to receive the Serve, alongside the team’s Libero.
Note: The Setter, The Opposite Hitter and the Middle Blocker must not participate in the Serve Reception when in the 5-1 Formation in Volleyball.

Outside Hitter Moves in the 6-0 Formation
In the 6-0 Formation in Volleyball the players have no specialized function. Therefore, there is no specialized Outside Hitter, only players that take on this role according to the rotation.
Outside Hitter Moves in the 4-2 and 5-1 Formation
Serve Reception
In both the 4-2 and 5-1 Formation, the Outside Hitter must always move towards the back zone (back court), when the team is receiving the Serve.

Position Changes for Attacking
Immediately after receiving the Serve, the Outside Hitters must be positioned to attack in position 4 (end of the net) and for attacks in the back zone or second hit attacks.

Position Changes during Serve
The Outside Hitter standing in the back court (back zone) takes part in the Defense, usually in position 6 (middle back), when his or her team is serving.
As for the Outside Hitter standing at the net (attack zone), this player takes part in the Block, moving to block in position 4 (end of the net, on the left side of the net).
