Serve Receive Formations in Volleyball
The serve receive formations in Volleyball are the ways in which a Volleyball team is going to be positioned to receive the serve.
W Serve Receive Formation in Volleyball
-
Defensive System used with beginning teams in Volleyball.
-
It’s usually used in the 6-0 Formation (for beginners).
-
5 players position themselves making a W shape to receive the serve.
-
The sixth player, who is out of the receive formation, is the Setter.
IMPORTANT NOTE!
The Setter is responsible for the Set and, hence, for the team’s second touch. Therefore, it does not make sense that he take part in the serve reception in any of the serve receive formations in Volleyball.
Serve Receive Formation In Volleyball with 4 players
-
4 players position themselves in a semicircular arrangement to perform the serve reception.
-
The Setter and a specialized Hitter are free from the reception to focus on the attack.
-
Volleyball Defensive System used by high-level teams.
-
3 players position themselves making a “V” shape or “inverted V” shape to receive the serve.
-
This defensive system uses the Libero.
-
The Setter, a specialized hitter (Opposite) and the middle hitter (Middle Blocker) are free from the serve reception in this Volleyball Defensive System.
-
Used by high-level teams that do not make use of the Libero (very unusual).
-
Used also by teams that receive the Serve only with the Libero and an Outside Hitter that also sets the ball.
-
In a team without a Libero, the Outside Hitters do the Serve reception, leaving the Setter, the Middle Blockers and the Opposite Hitter focused on the attack only.
-
As for a team with a Libero, he or she and an Outside Hitter perform the reception and the Setter, the Middle Blocker, the other Middle Blocker and the Opposite Hitter focus on the attack only.
