What is a Spike in Volleyball?
The Spike in Volleyball is a basic Attacking skill. It is performed by hitting the ball with the palm of the hand downward with power and speed.
What is the goal of the Spike in Volleyball?
The main goal of the Spike in Volleyball is to hit the ball so that it touches the playing area of the opponent’s court.
The Spike may also be used to “explore” the opponent’s Block, that is, to perform the Spike hit in such a way that the ball hits the Block and is sent out of the playing area.
How is the Spike performed in Volleyball?
The stages of the Spike are:
- A quick run to build momentum (some Spikes may be performed without the need of the run due to a possible lack of space);
- A jump to get the player high in the air, so that he or she can hit the ball in the highest point possible;
- A downward hit on the ball, with the palm of the hand, and the wrist bent at the moment of the hit.
Types of Spikes in Volleyball
There are three types of Spikes in Volleyball according to the trajectory the ball:
- Cross-court shot – as the name suggests, it is a spike in which the ball crosses the court, that is, it is a spike in which the ball goes from one side of the court to the other.
- Line shot – it is Spike in which the ball travels following a trajectory parallel to the side line of the opponent’s court.
- Hard-driven Spike – the hard-driven Spike is a type of Spike in which the ball hits the opponent’s court in the attack zone, close to the net. That happens when the Spike is performed and there is no Block or only a Single Block.
