VOLLEYBALL ROTATIONS SYSTEM
Volleyball Rotations start before the start of each set, the coach must present the initial formation of his team, which will also determine the order of players in service in each set.
VOLLEYBALL ROTATION POSITIONS
The Volleyball positions follow the order of the players designed to serve. Starting from position 1 (first player to serve) to position 2 (second player to serve and so on, till position 6.
Front Zone Positions
- Position 2 – Right side
- Position 3 – Middle
- Position 4 – Left side
Back Zone Positions
- Position 1 – Right side
- Position 6 – Middle
- Position 5 – Left side
ROTATION FOULS
It is a rotation foul when:
- A player from the back zone is closer to the centerline than his correspondent from the front zone.
Ex.: When the player in position 6 is closer to the centerline than the player in position 3.
- A player in a middle position is closer to the sidelines (left or right) than the other player in the same zone (front or back)
Ex.: When the player in position 6 is closer from the left sideline than the player in position 5 or closer to the right sideline than the player in position 1.
ROTATION ORDER
The rotation order is determined by the initial team formation in each set. This order cannot be modified during the set.
WHEN A TEAM SHOULD MAKE A ROTATION
The rotation is made every time the team receiving the service wins the point and wins the right to serve, at that moment a rotation is performed.
WHO TO PROCEED WITH THE ROTATION SYSTEM
Players on the team that has earned the right to serve will advance one position clockwise (see image below).
The player in position 2 will advance to position 1 and will perform the service.
STEP BY STEP ROTATION
Note the image above where the red team players are being represented by letters.
1. Imagine that the Red team was receiving the service;
2. Red team has won the point and the right to serve;
3. The Red team must rotate clockwise;
4. Player D who was in position 1 will advance to position 6;
5. Player E who was in position 6 will advance to position 5;
6. Player F who was in position 5 will advance to position 4;
7. Player C who was in position 4 will advance to position 3;
8. Player B who was in position 3 will advance to position 2;
9. Player A who was in position 2 will advance to position 1 and must serve.
SERVICE ORDER FOUL
A service order foul occurs when the service is made for a player out of order, presented by the team before the start of the set.
Example: In the example of the image above, player A would be responsible for the service after the rotation, but if player B serves, there is an error in the service order.
PUNISHMENT FOR A SERVICE ORDER FOUL
When a foul occurs in the order of service, the scorer paralyzes the rally and a point is awarded to the opponent team. Also, the opponent team also wins the right to serve.
The team that made the service order mistake, must correct its rotation order before restarting the game.
